    Description

Rare Type 2, Obv. Die Clash Designation!
    1959 Franklin Half Dollar
    Obverse Die Clash
with Type 2 Reverse (Not on Slab)
    PCGS / CAC MS64
Affectionately known as "THE BLOB," this is actually a die pair with multiple varieties. It has an unusual blob-like die clash around Franklin's nose, which at first resembles a double die, doubled nose! Second, it has a very nice goiter clash on Franklin's neck, which is becoming popular. Third, it is unusual to see a clash variety on a Type 2 reverse coin. Fourth, a die chip can be found in the eagles wings, and an unusual die fissure runs from the chip into the side of the bell.
One of the more unusual die clashes in the series. Instead of spikes or "teeth" in or around the mouth, this die shows semi-circular die lumps at the junction of the lip and the tip of the nose. We have observed this clash type on no other Franklin date. It also shows the more typical horn shaped clash near Franklin's neck and the goiter clash on his neck. The retired Proof dies developed a die break on the eagle' wing, right where the edge of Franklin's nose clashed and weakened the die steel. The short fissure starts as a tiny round die chip in the feathers and makes its way across the field and into the side of the bell.
This scarce variety has been known about and sought by specialists for about a decade, but has never been added to variety catalogues. We have now started receiving Obverse Die Clash designations on these from PCGS. This is the first time they have been formally acknowledged!
The present specimen is sharply struck and the retired Proof dies are still semi-reflective. A few interesting die lines run up and down the obverse (as made) and do not affect the grade. In fact, they add interest to the die variety! The bell lines appear to us to be complete for the Type 2 reverse, so the omission of an FBL on the label is puzzling. Mostly brilliant, but with some light, original fiery gold patina. A fantastic representative of this "new" variety!
CAC, or Certified Acceptance Corporation, green-stickers only coins that are solid or high-end for their assigned PCGS/NGC grades. CAC will gold-sticker PCGS/NGC coins they believe to be under-graded outright. The extra verification provided by CAC confirms that you aren't buying low-end material; and our specialization in high-end coins means that you will continue to see CAC stickers appearing in DM RARE COINS’ inventory!
